Mandate

To conduct soil survey and mapping of the country to promote scientific and optimal land use programmes in collaboration with relevant institutions and agencies.

To Impart training and education and promoting awareness on the soil resources and its state of health.

To conduct and promote research in the National Agricultural Research Sytem in the areas of Pedology, Soil Survey, Geomorphology, Cartograpyhy, Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System, Land Evaluation and Land Use Planning.

Activities

	Development of methodology to conduct soil survey using latest remotely sensed data products.
	Coordination of soil surveys conducted by different agencies.
	Correlation of soils at different categoric levels.
	Development of soil classification rationale.
	Preparation of land resource region maps and agro-ecological inventory.
	Applied and basic research in pedology, remote sensing application and land evaluation for land use planning.
	Assessment of soil degradation for resource conservation.
	Development of National Soil Resource Database.
	Monitoring changes in soil quality.
	Human Resource Development – PG education and training in soil survey and allied fields.
	Consultancy services.
