Background

Regional Centre, Jorhat is one of the five Centres of the National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning, ICAR. This Regional Centre was established in 1979 and is involved in soil resource mapping, soil correlation and classification and undertaking research in land use planning in the north eastern region comprising the seven states.   Total area under its jurisdiction is about 25.5 million ha. which covers approximately 7.7 per cent of total geographical area of the country. 

The office-cum-laboratory and residential quarters situated in the Jamuguri village area on the western side of Assam Agricultural University campus is about 8 km from Jorhat town.

Activities & Achievements

Since inception of this Centre, the activities were limited to the district level soil survey as per the prevailing policy at that time. Major survey work pertained to reconnaissance and detailed soil survey as demanded by the user agencies.
